Shantaram Season 1
Episode No 4 Recap And Review
His mother was proud of him and that was enough for Dale. Today, Lin appreciates her new life. He feels he has a second chance to make things right and Sagarwada is the perfect place to do it. Rujul's body is found and Khaderbhai's right-hand man Abdullah pays the cops to frame it as a robbery. Rafiq, who is Walidbhai's right-hand man, also follows orders and reaches Deputy Minister Pandey's room and gives him the money he was about to give to Rujul and asks him to follow the deal.
An old woman named Sonam comes to Lin with a problem in the slums. His wound has gotten worse, but he won't let Lee look at him. Parvati and Prabhu are called for help, and Lin predicts that she will die if they don't get her to the hospital soon.
Karla learns of Walidbhai's plans first hand when she meets Pandey for lunch. He warns them to stay away. Lin decides to go to the hospital with Sonam who decides to get medicine. A government doctor demands money to see him, which Lin refuses. When things escalate, they leave the hospital and Lin must find another way out of the black market.
Sebastian asks Lisa to stay with him, despite her rejecting his advances. They go back to their place and Sebastian doesn't put up much of a fight when Lisa again grabs a pack of cocaine. This angers Lisa, who says that if Sebastian wants to have a chance, he needs to be stronger for her and learn to say no.
Lin learns of Rujul's death, but goes on a tour gig with Prabhu to make some quick money. Khaderbhai reaffirms his love for Karla and says that he will always protect her from anything that threatens her.
Although he agrees to help Lin, he assures Abdullah that Lin must make him wait to make him more grateful for Khaderbhai's gesture. Lisa has a chance encounter with Carla at Reynaldo's house and is sad to leave her place. It seems that the two will soon reconcile amicably. He bribes Prabhu to take him to Lin. In the slum, he finds out why Dale is doing all this.
He is still afraid of being discovered by the authorities, but his conscience does not allow him to escape. He asks her to be careful with Khaderbhai and take care of herself. He takes an interest in her and the two share a tender moment.
That night, Ravi brings a bomb fish for Lin as an apology. But it's really rotten to upset Lin's stomach, it does. Abdullah takes Lin to the Kaala Topis, a gang of ugly thieves and smugglers. Abdullah calls them the best, and their leader, Ruby, offers Lee some tea from the food he tried.
After Lin passes her, Ruby tells the price of the drugs. It's overwhelming, and he's not going to feel kindly towards the same people who ostracize his community. He has enough to buy antibiotics and IV drugs for Sonam.
On his way back, Abdulla Rafiq and his men are attacked. When Dale interrupts them, he is easily defeated and nearly stabbed. He saves Abdullah's life, but does not allow him to kill Rafiq.
This surprises Abdullah, who tells Lin that he is from Iran and only wants one to follow. Khaderbhai is a man and Abdullah says that fate has written Lin and his fate. It is beyond their control. Lin doesn't tell Ravi to Qasim, choosing to do everything she can to gain his trust and not allow the hatred to grow.
Lin treats Sonam and she seems to be fine after all. People are once again realizing Lee's kind heart and deeds for the community. Abdullah reports the events of the day to Khaderbhai, who says that Lin is indeed an honorable man. He instructs Abdullah Lin to buy all the medicines needed to continue the treatment of the congregation. Lin is indeed part of the plan.
Episode Review
The adventures of Dale Conti (or "Linbaba") become more interesting to watch with each episode. The makers of Shantaram have decided to pace the story without rushing it and in a way that allows all the characters to be well fleshed out and have a sense of purpose towards the story.
Episode 4 touched on all of them, bringing to the fore the changing dynamics of the story and the sinister plot unfolding in the upcoming gang wars firm.
Dale's big heart is truly a sight to behold. Here we have a moral hero who always puts others before himself. That's probably what made them do the same to him.
Carla and him are definitely getting close and this might be the right place for him to open up. Episode 4 also introduced Kaala Topis in a pretty raw way. Something tells us they'll have a big role to play in future episodes. Dale has inadvertently become a part of the game and it remains to be seen how exactly he will fit in.
