Shantaram Charlie Hunnam New Apple TV Series Season 2 Update, Release Date

Updated or cancelled?

Apple TV's Shantaram is being applauded for reviving the old Bombay charm of the 1980s. We see the bustling city in the glory of its former avatar. Everything that makes it the city we know today is done with amazing clarity and direction. Now that season 1 is coming to an end, anticipation for another season is bound to die down.

Driven by the delightful performance of Charlie Hunnam, Shantaram has surely found a place in the hearts of the audience. But has Shantaram been renewed for season 2? Here's what we know.

What is Shantaram Season 1 about?

Dale Conti (Hunnam) escaped from an Australian prison. He was convicted of a bank robbery and the murder of a policeman in a chaos with his wife. After escaping, he flees to Bombay for refuge. Under her new name, Lindsey Ford, she befriends Dale Prabhu and stops his wandering legs by staying as a temporary doctor in Sagar Wada, a slum in the middle of the city. Local criminal Khaderbhai and his accomplice Karla soon notice Lin and their paths cross.

One thing leads to another, and Lin is firmly on the path to salvation by helping the community. But as Bulbul makes his presence felt in Bombay, his days are numbered as the journalist's politics and ambitions threaten to overtake him.

We have extensive information about Shantaram on the site, including recaps for every episode and a full season review.

Has Shantaram been renewed for season 2?

At the time of writing, Shantaram has not been renewed for a second season. Given the nature of the show's content, this could well change if Apple feels the show has earned enough credit.

One thing the streaming platform does well is to strongly intervene in the update/cancel task. The decision is quick and often based on data rather than emotion. Surely Shantaram will not be dragged if they don't consider the response to season 1 to be positive.

Although the audience ratings have been very good so far, critics have not liked the show.

The long duration and extended episodes ensured that the story lacked the sharpness that modern audiences desire. Added to this is Charlie Hunnam's recent spinal injury which will see the actor take it easy for the next two years. Right now, despite positive reviews from us, it seems unlikely that the show will be renewed for a second season.

What we know so far about season 2.

Considering that there is no Apple TV sequel, almost nothing is known about season 2. Of course, this all depends on how the viewing figures are for Apple, so we'll have to wait and see.

Story-wise, the writers have enough material to match Roberts' other book, Mountain Shadows. Season 1's story leaves a lot of room to continue Lin's saga. A second run is also on the cards. Imagine if that happened! For now, the mood is bleak.
