Shantaram Season 1

Episode No 10 Recap And Review

The days leading up to the run are the days that come first in Dig Two Graves, the title of Shantaram's 10th episode. Nightingale's sly tactic of tricking the inmates into thinking it was a sniper's job when Barnes beat Lin. After shooting Barnes back, he narrowly escapes being stabbed, and that's when Lin decides to run for his life. His hand was really forced, and he did not waver from his decision to confess in court.

In the present, a vengeful Raheem is relentlessly after Lin and Didier. After Maurizio's lie, he thinks they stole his money. But thankfully Lee's bonds with a pure heart helped him. Prabhu helps them escape in his newly bought taxi. Lin is disillusioned with his circumstances and feels that he has lost an opportunity in life - a second chance. Lin learns the truth from Didier, who informs Abdullah about his situation. The announced brother rushes to her aid and the two come up with a plan to free Lee from this suspicion.

Prabhu once again proves useful as he tries to negotiate between Raheem and Lin to sort things out. Karla's conscience made her say something about the deal with Sagar Wada. He discusses his options with Lisa, whom he asks to help with evidence about Rujul and Waleed (flashback from episode 1 when Lisa visits Zhou's place). Lisa tentatively agrees - on the condition that she can flee the city before the news gets out. The plan goes accordingly when Lisa and Kavita meet and the former tells the journalist a modified version of everything.

Lisa asked to escape to Modena and Carla with her. Carla is deeply conflicted about what to do next. Lisa frames Walid for Rujul, thus protecting Khader's reputation and name. Karla pretends to work for Khader's rival and even gives Kavita the items she mentioned in the last episode that showed Sunita and Pandey together. He has Sunita at his back and Kavita looks confident for now. Prabhu, Lin and Abdullah plan to set up an ambush at Rahim's place, and Lin gets Maurizio's approval to set it up. He tells him that it has nothing to do with my business.

The drug dealer loses his composure after Abdullah threatens him in Khader's name. Lin finally takes Maurizio's hand after Raheem agrees to hand him over. Lin, being Lin, decides to run on his own, but finds himself a bloody mess after Maurizio escapes killing all of Raheem's men. Lin panics and leaves the place, having already been in enough trouble.

The "Eagle" descends on Bombay in pursuit of its elusive prisoner. Kavita surprisingly protects Lin and kicks her out of her office saying that she ran after learning about Bulbul's intentions. It's essentially a deal between Karla and Kavita where she gets a story on Walid and lets Lee off the hook. Nishant agrees to the choice and the two excitedly build their story.

After Mayritizo's capture, things get tense in the Palace. Khader gives Carla the money she wants, but also expresses her desire to get new passports for Lisa and Modena. As the bird sings about their betrayal, Carla walks in and Maurizio realizes that she is the one who rejected him. Karla doesn't care about it now as she has handed over the money to Sunita. Their contract seemed to last. He can now start a new life and Karla also takes Pandey off the hook, now she has a puppet in the ministry to hand over Sagar Wada to Khader bhai.

Zhou reminds Carla of her new knowledge before leaving the place. Lin makes a deal with Lisa at Carla's place: the deal with Maurizio and Lisa and Modena's passports, Lin finds at Raheem's place. Didier is also involved in the deal and along with Liza, brings Maurizio back for a promise to return the money he stole. Sunita is now with Kavita to testify as promised, but Lisa has left her place.

As they leave, Zhou tells Carla to remember that their secrets now bind them. As Abdullah and Karla leave the Saray's estate, Zhou follows them. Meanwhile, Lin goes to Carla's and finds Lisa there. He asks her about her involvement in the whole Maurizio-Raheem thing and she reveals everything she knows. Lin tells him that if he buys Maurizio for him, he will give him and his passport back to Modena. Lisa reluctantly agrees.

Didier intervenes to contact Maurizio and the latter calls Lisa instead of Carla. He arranges a meeting between Modena and Maurizio at his place, where Modena will pay him back in exchange for their passports and some cash. Maurizio agrees. Karla takes Sunita to Kavita as promised. When he arrives at his place after dark, he is shocked to find Lisa gone.

An even bigger shock awaits Lin. When he comes at Carla with a gun, he knocks the vengeful Maurizio to the ground. But he clears Lee's misunderstanding by telling him the truth about Carla and Khader. Lin is heartbroken when she realizes that she is being used and none of them are real to her. The people and confidence he thought he had won at this time were all coincidental. With Bulbul still in town, things begin to pile up for Lynn as she is unsure of Kavita's revelations. He believes Lee is still out there, but with no help from the local police, he is faced with the daunting task of locating her on his own.

Lin catches Carla lying, handing over the passports and confronting her. All he knew was that this would happen when Lin discovered his unwitting involvement in Khader's plan to defeat Sagar Wada. He tries to dissuade her from leaving the city, even saying that he cares for Kavita. But the man is not sure. He doesn't believe a word Carla says after that and vows to leave town and never see her again.

 Episode Review

Lin has to be the most tortured soul in recent television history. Nothing is going right for him. The man just can't catch a break! When he seems to have a genuine connection with Carla and finally finds someone who accepts him for his truth. This illusion was dispelled by a shocking revelation. Despite being in the best position strategically, Lin would trade that for "love" any day.

There are many stereotypes that Shantaram starts rooting for after the 6th episode. This latest episode continues the trend of strong action in the plot along with moments of sensitive vulnerability for the characters on screen. We've now reached an advanced stage of storytelling that feels like a turning point for many of them, especially Lin.

Hunnam really did a great job of getting his teeth into Lin's skin and giving a character that lacked charisma. Whatever happens next, episodes 8, 9 and 10 will feel like a very well thought out build up to the high points of the show or a great finale.
