Shantaram Season 1

Episode No 9 Recap And Review

Flashbacks and episode openings have become something for Shantaram. Episode 9 also opens with a look back at Lee's escape from prison and the aftermath. His mother is proud of Lin and suspects the officer had something to do with the prison break, as Lin himself admitted to serving time in court. He cannot visit the house because the police are constantly monitoring the house. Her mother agrees with the idea because it means a longer life for Lin. Today, Lin Sagar bids farewell to Wada. He hands over the wheel to Parvati as he expects Didier to prepare a passport for him. When the young guide tells Lin that he will be a taxi driver at night, Lin asks to go to Prabhu's village as planned.

Parvati and Prabhu will go on their first official date that night. Lynn is really serious about Carla and she seems to reciprocate his feelings. He finally realizes that Lin understands what it's like to be with him. Maurizio threatens Lisa and takes away her and Modena's passports. Modena actually plans to take the money they made selling drugs and run away together. Lisa is angry with Modena for doing this without her presence and asks him to take the money and leave.

Didier remembers how she left her ex-boyfriend Alberto when he saw that he was old and lonely. Didier now feels that he has become a man like Alberto and has not left the house for the past week. He is traumatized after being beaten and humiliated. But he failed to produce a passport for Lin, who finally revealed his checkered past to make Didier feel how desperate he was.

Pandey falls into Karla's trap and confronts Sunita. They get their pictures and records of shady dealings. He has no choice now and accepts Khader's demands. Karla gives a high moral value to the whole situation and feels that they are taking advantage of Pandey's weakness and love for Sunita. Khader makes good on his promise to Carla in episode 6, giving her the opportunity to walk away from this life with a decent amount of money. Khader also agrees to Carla's wish to pay Sunita's debts and free her. Carla and Lisa reunite and discuss their feelings for Lynn and their regrets from their past relationship.

To save his own skin, Maurizio frames Lin as Raheme running off with the money. Despite having the chance to break up, Carla decides against it while meeting Lynn. There is an unspoken sadness in their eyes, but they both seem powerless to do anything about it. Nightingale, waiting for an iota of encouragement to bring Lin down, hits a golden chance when Nishant becomes desperate and sends dances with Lin's picture to various police stations in Ocean Twins. The sergeant feels they've finally got their man, and Lin convinces Nishant that he's their man.

Charlie is also soon found out for using someone else's name for money. Unfortunately, he was killed in the crossfire in his hiding place. But not before helping Lin in a big way. Nightingale asks him where Lin is. Charlie refuses to give him up and even admits that he killed Flores, not Lynn. What will the officer do about the situation? Will he give in to his personal animosity or remain professional and report neutrally?

A twist in the story awaits as Karla betrays Khader and instead hands him over to Kavita for the sake of saving Lee. But honestly, that ship has sailed because Nishant has already sent the fax to Bulbul. Despite Didier's intentions to keep Lee safe, Raheem followed them and Lee was nearly killed. But he doesn't know what's going on, and the episode ends abruptly with Lint trying to figure out what went wrong.

  Episode Review

Despite all their flaws, the characters of 'Shantaram' have a certain charm about them. It rarely comes to light, but it can be quite gratifying to witness. This episode had many manifestations of that dynamic in the form of Lin and Didier and Carla and Lin.

Carla became a dark horse that everyone appreciated. It remains to be seen how much he can control when push comes to shove.

But I don't like how Walid's threat has been neutralized for now. Maybe with Pandey's betrayal, he will revive again. The great rivalry predicted to pit Walid and Khader against each other did not manifest itself in water wars. Surely there could be more? It should be.

Considering how slow and meandering the show was a few episodes ago, it's good to see it redeem itself and build towards a really strong finale.
